Our Lactose Intolerance DNA kit is the first home test available on the market to confirm if you have primary lactose intolerance, with an accuracy of 99.5%. Lactose Intolerance is an inherited condition, where the amount of the enzyme lactase that your body produces starts to fall, usually from the age of 3 years onwards. The symptoms of the condition develop over time and vary from one person to the next so it is very difficult to diagnose without a test.

Simply take a saliva sample using the swab provided in the kit and send it to our accredited laboratory for analysis. The DNA in your saliva sample will be analysed for a genetic predisposition to lactose intolerance and your results can be downloaded from the website using a unique code provided in the kit within 7 to 10 days.
Everything you need for the test is included in the kit, including easy to follow instructions, a swab and a return envelope.
To take the test simply:
- Rinse your mouth with water
- Open the box, which contains a cotton swab in a paper/plastic package and an instruction leaflet. Carefully remove the sticker including the analysis code from the package leaflet and attach it to the paper/plastic package that contains the cotton bud. Open the upper part of the package and pull out the cotton swab.
- Rub the cotton end of the swab against the inside of your cheek.
- Place the cotton swab in its packaging and then into the kit box and seal it. The box is now ready to be used as the return package. Send the prepaid shipment by post.
Results are provided within 5 working days after the sample is received at the laboratory. You can check the status of your test and obtain your test results, using the website address and your test's unique code number provided with the test.

About Lactose Intolerance
Lactose intolerance is a common problem of the digestive system that is caused by lack of the enzyme lactase, which is used to break down lactose, a natural sugar found in the milk of mammals, including cows, goats, and sheep. Foods that contain lactose include:
- dairy products such as cream, cheese and yoghurt
- biscuits and chocolate
- some breakfast cereals
Symptoms of Lactose Intolerance
Lactose intolerance occurs when the body cannot break down and absorb lactose. It is usually caused by a lack of the enzyme lactase, which is produced by the small intestine. If there is not enough lactase in the small intestine, the lactose cannot be digested and it passes intact into the lower intestine, where it is fermented by bacteria and gives rise to abdominal symptoms such as:
- a bloated stomach
- flatulence (wind)
- frequent diarrhoea
- stomach pains and rumbling
- stomach cramps
The symptoms of lactose intolerance can be very similar to those of other conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or milk protein intolerance. IBS is a chronic (long-term) disorder that affects the digestive system. Milk protein intolerance is an adverse reaction to the protein in milk from cows, but it does not involve the immune system (milk allergy). Due to the similarities of these conditions, they can easily be confused and so testing for Lactose Intolerance is particularly advantageous in ruling the condition in or out and enabling you to make appropriate changes to your diet.
Types of Lactose Intolerance
There are three different types of lactose intolerance. By far the most common is Primary lactose intolerance, an inherited condition where the production of lactase in the body usually starts to fall from the age of 3 years onwards. The symptoms of lactose intolerance develop over time and will vary from one individual to the next. Primary lactose intolerance is very common and found in approximately 5% of adults in the UK. In some ethnic populations it is even more common, particularly those where milk is not traditionally included in their diet. These include people of Hispanic, south Indian, American Indian and black or Ashkenazi Jewish origin, where lactose intolerance can occur in up to 50-80% of adults.
The other types of Lactose Intolerance are uncommon. Secondary lactose intolerance can occur as a side effect of other intestinal diseases, such as coeliac disease and is often temporary. Congenital lactase deficiency is a very rare genetic disorder present at birth. By only eating or drinking dairy products that are within your body’s tolerance levels, or by choosing products with low levels of lactose, the symptoms can be controlled. Lactose intolerance can range from mild to severe, depending on how much lactose a person has in their diet and how well their body can digest it.
